I straighten my hair usually every other day. Recently i got a cut and I want to keep from getting split ends. I know this isn’t entirely avoidable, but I wanted to know if anyone had any tips or products that work well for them, to keep hair as healthy as possible.
First, Jessa, above me said "Head & Shoulders Dangerously Straight conditioner." Dangerously Straight comes from Herbal Essences, not Head & Shoulders.
Anyways. I have straightened my hair nearly everyday since the fifth grade and now I’m a Freshman in high school. I have had seriously, almost no split ends my entire life, and my hair is very healthy because I make sure to protect and treat my hair before damage occurs.
It’s the winter season now, so use a good moisturizing shampoo & conditioner. I’ve always used Pantene Pro-V Daily Moisture Renewal. Pantene is by far the best conditiner I’ve ever used. It’s very thick and rich unlike other drugstore brand conditioners, and really penetrates each and every hair strand. As for the shampoo, I don’t see much of a difference compared to other shampoos. I don’t recommend Garnier Fructis, Aussie, Head & Shoulders, or Loreal. Herbal Essences is decent, it’s main attraction are the scents. Pantene smells good also, and is definitely the best quality shampoo & conditioner line for a drugstore brand I’ve found yet.
When you get out of the shower, use a straightening CREME while your hair is still wet/damp so your hair can absorb the product. I recommend John Freida Runway Straight Smoothing Milk.
Then, ALWAYS use a heat protectant spray. The highest quality flat iron spray I’ve found is the CHI Iron Guard 44. Spritz it throughout your hair before using a flat iron, and distribute it properly. Make sue your hair is COMPLETELY dry before using a flat iron, otherwise your hair will fry, just as if you were to drop water onto a hot skillet.. it sizzles!
When using a flat iron, use quick, smooth, and steady motion. Leaving the iron on your hair for longer than 5 seconds will damage it.
After you’re done straightening your hair, comb it out with a fine tooth comb to ensure there are no tangles left behind. Take a dime-nickel size amount of BioSilk Silk Therapy, depending on the amount of hair you have, rub it all around your hands and between your fingers, and with the excess layer that is on your hands, begin with the ends of your hair and work your way up. Try not to touch the roots of your hair with this product, because the product will grease of the top. It’s meant to renew and lock in moisture into the ends of your hair to prevent splitting and promote healthy shine.
If you can, use Biolustre once a year or so. It’s an EXTREMELY intensive healing treatment for your hair, and literally bonds the inner cortexs of each strand to mend split ends. It’s around $55 the last time I purchased (www.biolustre.com), but with the results, it’s WELL worth the money. If you’re opting for something cheaper, Neutrogena Triple Moisture Hair Mask should do the trick, but you have to do this more often, like twice a week, and it’s $7 a tub. The money will eventually add up to about $14/month. That’s $168 on deep conditioning per year, as opposed to $60/year on high quality product that does more than just moistuize.
Hope this helped! Best wishes
