Will taking low calorie Whey protein (body building) powder have a bad effect on women, ie weight gain?
October 25, 2009I am female and thinking of using Body Fortress Whey protein to build up a bit of muscle (no plans to be a body builder – more defined basically), but am worried that unless I substantially increase my work out routine the Whey protein will just make me gain weight?
Muscle Milk Light by Cytosport helps to loose weight or maintain it. My GF takes it and likes it.

how can i eat healthy in a junkfood eating family?
October 25, 2009I am a high school student stuck in an unhealthy family trying to eat a healthy whole balanced diet. I hate white flour and sugar but that is the only thing that my family buys. Every time they buy it I tell them that I don’t use it and ask them to buy pure cane sugar or whole-wheat flour. Every time I try to tell them the benefits of a healthy wholesome diet, they get all pissed off and make me feel stupid. I want to quit eating factory bread and make homemade WHOLE WHEAT bread. I am also a vegan and my dad is a dairy farmer. They always eat and drink things like soda, chips, and desserts. I want to cut off using peanut butter that has sugar and hydrogenated oils but that’s all that they buy. How can I convince my family to eat healthy? I am trying to get a job to buy my own food but the economy sucks here and there are no jobs. Also whenever my family buys fruits and vegetables I eat them all and they get angry with me.
We feel your pain. Perhaps you can set up special supplies for yourself (whole wheat bread, brown rice, etc.) then prepare to supplement according to their menu plan for the week. When they make sandwiches, make your own healthy substitutions. When they make a dish that has a starchy side, make a pot of brown rice enough to cover the meal and any leftovers. It might be no use trying to convert them to healthier foods, which often cost more, but at least see if you can ‘fend’ for yourself. But I’m sure if you made homemade whole wheat bread, no one would complain after you did it…the smell will change their mind.
You can also check for food co-ops in your area, where the family pays a set price for fresh vegetables (I think they are even delivered to you)…it’s economical; however, you have no say in what fresh vegetables you will get…it’s whatever was in abundance…but it’s farm fresh and you are supporting local farmers.

what are some healthy weight loss foods?
October 25, 2009i work out from 2 hours a day id just like to know what foods to eat if i wanted to lose weight. like, whats healthy? veges grilled chicken and fish….any ideas?
Pretty much all vegetables are good. Some have a little more calories than others but generally they have few calories and lots of fiber. Also, if you like bread or pasta, try to eat whole wheat and make sure they don’t just "contain" wheat but actually are whole wheat. They not only have fiber and less processed grains, but whole wheat has been found to have other health benefits as well. Try to drink plenty of fluids but not juice or soda. Drink water, and if you don’t like just plain water, drink flavored seltzer waters that don’t have calories or very few. People don’t realize it when they drink all their calories because they don’t feel full. Turkey has less fat than chicken, and make sure you eat baked chicken or saute it in a small amount of olive oil and use seasonings for flavoring (i.e. spices, garlic, onions, etc.). Try to avoid too much salt because that can make you retain water. You do need some sodium in your diet though. That’s it for now. Good luck.
What is a healthy weight loss?
October 25, 2009I’ve decided to set some smaller short term goals for myself instead of the wopping 50lbs that i’d like to use. But i’m not exactly sure what a healthy number would be in a few weeks. I’m 5′3 171 lbs. I’d like to loose 50lbs but i want to pace myself because i have discovered in the past that you can just loose 50lbs so i want to set some short term goals for a better motivation.

How does one GAIN weight in a healthy manner?
October 25, 2009I’m 34 years old and have weighed in at somewhere between 120 and 130 lbs. since I was in grade nine. I eat what I think is a normal amount for an adult, so it’s not a matter of needing to eat more, maybe better but not more. I have a hereditary fast metabolism, so I am sure that is a lot of the issue. However, I am geting married next September and for the first time in my life I care a little bit more about what I look like. I don’t want to be a body builder by any means but I would like to put a little weight and muscle on so I look noticably healthier for my wedding.
Looking for tips on diet and exercise that might promote a healthy weight gain. I know the questions usually go the other direction here, but any help you could offer would be great.
Thanks in advance.
Increasing starchy, sugary, and greasy foods is not a good idea. These are bad for your body. Even if you want to gain weight, your calories should come from foods that are good for you. Healthy fats include omega 3 oils like fish oils, flax, and nuts. Good sources of protein include organic meats, fish, and organic poultry. Increase the number of meals per day to 5 or 6 small balanced meals. Protein powders and shakes can be added as meals. Some are flavored and only need added water and some others can blended with water or your choice of juices to improve the taste. It would be a plus to add a small amount of flax seed oil and some psillium powder to add some healthy fiber.
Supplements
A good quality multivitamin and mineral supplement is a good idea. Some people find that their muscle mass improves with extra amino acid formulas. Some people who are very ill may need liquid nutritional preparations that are available through their doctors.
Exercise
Exercise is also important. Resistance training like lifting weights will tend to increase muscle mass more so than aerobic training which is better suited to losing fat. Resistance training can be done at a health club or with the proper equipment at home.
If you need to gain weight, it is possible to do so in a healthy manner with the right foods and exercise. Eating junk foods, sugary or greasy foods is not healthy. Neither are taking steroids or questionable supplements. Be sure that anything you take into your body is healthy.
What do you think is a healthy weight for me?
October 25, 2009I am 16, 5′8 and I weight 175 lbs. I found online that I have a larger body frame if that means anything. I swim so I have a bit of muscle in my body. The BMI says I am a bit over weight, but I think losing 15 lbs would be good, but I think that’s still considered over weight. I have no idea. I look healthy, and feel healthy. I’ve just go a bit of stomach chub that never goes away.

"A 68-inch tall, 175-pound, 16-year-old girl has a body mass index (BMI) of 26.7, which is at the 91st percentile for age. This suggests that this girl is at risk of being overweight. A healthy weight range for this particular girl would be from about 118-pounds to 162-pounds."
